Kyuquot Frequently Asked Questions
What time of the year do you fish in Kyuquot Sound?
Our fishing time in Kyuquot is relatively short, June 8 to September 1. We are there through the best Halibut time, best Chinook and the best light tackle Coho time. The season starts off flying with good catches of large mature Chinooks and Halibut. The fishing action stays constant for the whole time that we are in Kyuquot. Near the end of our stay the Coho that are eight to twelve pounds, and the Chinook are the largest of the season

How long are the trips?
Trips are four days and three nights. Guests are picked up at 3:00pm on the day of arrival. Fishing commences shortly after dinner on the first day. The next two days are eight to ten hours of guided fishing. On departure days we fish the morning bite until about 10:00 am. When we arrive back at the ship/lodge where breakfast is waiting, the fish are packed up and departure is around noon.

What do we need to bring?
Here is a list of the things you need to bring:
  • Large fish coolers. We have styro-foam coolers on board but most guests prefer to bring their own igloo style coolers.
  • We have raingear on board but over the years we have found that guests prefer their own gear. If you don't have raingear don't go buy it. We have enough sets for everyone.
  • Personal toiletries.
  • Sunscreen hats and sun glasses. Long days on the water can be very demanding and the eyes and skin. Warm clothing is highly recommended, even though summer sun can be warm, the weather can change and require warm clothing. Also, deck shoes or rubber boots(something with a soft rubber grip), as the boat floors tend to get very slippery!
  • Motion sickness prevention medicine. Although most people are not affected by sea conditions, it is not worth the chance of it ruining your fishing trip. Purchase "the patch" also known as Transderm V or Dramamine. Gravel works but is not as effective.
  • -Personal alcoholic beverages. We do provide basic mixes and pop on board. Any exotic drink ingredients should be brought with you. Guests are required to bring their own alcoholic beverages. We do not sell alcohol on board and the near by village is a dry community. If you are flying and would like us to buy and store your alcohol beverages on board we are more than happy to do this for you. If you are flying in, and two planes are involved, be sure to split the alcohol between aircraft's, we have heard of incidents where one plane clears customs and takes off, then the last plane is checked with over their limit of import liquor and it was seized.

Where do we sleep and eat?
Our base camp for the past 10 years has been the Daleanne 1. I purchased this motor ship specifically for this operation. We have accommodations for 15 guests and crew. The lower deck quarters are two people shared rooms and upper deck quarters are three people shared cabins. We have four wash rooms on board and a large covered and enclosed aft deck that acts as a social area. On nice evenings dinners are served on the open bow area that overlooks a beautiful sheltered bay. The ship is easy to get around and access to the boats is through a staircase that leads to our large dock where the boats are moored.

What kinds of food do serve?
Every dinner is different. We use a rotating menu that consists of Hams, Roasts, Steak and Seafood's. Seafood is served with every meal but never as a main entrée. Breakfast is toast and cereal and fresh fruits. Packed lunches and eaten while out fishing. When you arrive back at the ship soup and fresh bread is always waiting. While we do have a semi fixed menu it is easy for us to change to suite the needs of the groups on board. On the last day before you leave we have a large brunch that includes; bacon, eggs, sausages, pancakes and hash browns. All beverages for the trip are supplied except for alcohol.

How many fish can we expect to take home?
The limits in our area allow anglers to retain 8 Salmon and 3 Halibut per trip. 4 Salmon can be Chinook and the rest Hatchery Coho, Pinks, Chum or Sockeye. Most guests take home limits of Chinook and Halibut and some of the other 4 available fish. Although we catch thousands of Coho only about 15 percent are Hatchery keepers. We primarily target large Chinook and Halibut and the other species are a by catch while fishing for Chinook.

What can we do with are fish if we want to continue on with our Vacation?
Many of our guests fit the 3 days of fishing into a planned vacation to western Canada. After fishing guests are left with a large amount of fish that must be cared for. This can be a problem if home is more than 3 days away. The answer is to have the fish processed in Campbell River at one of the two locations. Campbell River Seafood's, 250-287-4121 and Heidi's Seafoods, 250-287-2457, will custom package, cold or hot smoke and flash freeze your packaged fish and then ship your finished product anywhere in the world to suit your time frame. They will phone and let you know all the shipping information and when it is expected to arrive at your home or business.

How do we book a trip and how much does it cost?
Trips are based on triple occupancy and our rate per person is $ 1775.00 Cdn. at the ship and $1900.00 Cdn at the lodge, plus 6% tax. Singles and doubles are welcome but must be willing to share, to take advantage of our 3-person rate. We are very good at matching character when it comes to sharing boats. Many of guests have come as singles and doubles and have returned year after year with the people that they first shared a boat with. If you prefer to fish with 2 persons per boat, the price is $ 2475.00. To book a trip you must contact us to get the available dates. (murphy@island.net) Once you decide on the dates that suit your needs contact us again and we will send out a deposit request. This will ask for a non refundable deposit of $600 per person. On receipt of deposit we will send you a confirmation. Prior to your trip we will send you driving instructions and a list of things to bring

When do we pay for our trip and what is your cancellation policy?
The balance left owing on your trip is due 90 days prior to your departure. We will send out notices of balance due approx.120 days prior to your departure. The credit cards that we except are Visa and MasterCard. We do accept checks but require a credit card guarantee. Regarding American Credit cards, please be advised that we do not accept Nations Bank credit cards. The cards have an international security policy that automatically declines payment to us if the customer is not present to make telephone verification at our time of processing. Since we are remote, processing occurs after the guest has left, and the bank will decline the card, regardless of credit limits. We have struggled with this for the past three seasons.

Our cancellation policy is very simple. Deposits are non-refundable but are transferable up to 90 days prior to trip date. For cancellations within 90 days of departure, if your trip cannot be resold, 60% of your package price will be transferred to a trip later in the season or the following year - pending availability. We will do are best to accommodate all guests needs when it comes to changing trip dates but some times are hands are tied because of our tight schedule. The fishing season is very short and maximum occupancy is a must. During the off season we have many people that are not able to get a reservation to suite them or we are sold out. If we have short notice cancellation spots are very hard to fill because the people that wanted spots earlier have now made other plans or alternative arrangements. The full amount per person for the trip is payable if cancelled 30 days prior to the trip start date. This includes reductions of group sizes.
